The company I work for has given me a workstation as part of closing an office. My son would like to play Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite on it. It's a proper big chunk of kit, and with a GPU upgrade, would you consider this a reasonable platform as a gaming computer or is it junk. If junk, is there anything realistically salvagable here, MB, Chassis, PSU etc?

Nothing wrong with that!

As I was mentioning on the other thread; the 2x CPU's are aging a bit now and not the best for gaming, but in real terms they're still good enough.

I'm inclined to say try it with the current HW / GPU And see how you get on:- You could get a cheapish (£150 - 200?) GPU From CEX and bump the performance quite handily, but you may run into trouble if the PSU Doesn't have PCI-E Power connectors and need to change that as well.

I would try it as it, those games don't have huge requirements.

You can get GTX 1650 based cards that don't require external power.

I would imagine that beyond that you are on to diminishing returns, but these guys reckon you can do more -

\}}
If you got a plug-in wall monitor? I would be more concerned about how much power these older workstations use.

Which that doesn't it has only 1 hot swap PSU in a proprietary form factor so no upgradeability it does however have a decent graphics card for it's age so if it's cheap enough it won't be terrible as is but it's not a platform to start an upgrade on.

That's a decent PC. The CPUs are easily powerful enough to run the games you mention. The GPU (graphics card) is the weakest point, but still exceeds the minimum requirements for those games.

Decent sized SSD, and I wasn't sure, but it looks like it has 64GB RAM? That's loads. It won't be as fast as modern RAM, but it is easily fast enough.

As it is a dual CPU workstation, I would expect the power supply to be able to handle a beefier graphics card. I have an older model Dell workstation with dual Xeon processors and it came with a 1100W power supply. I fitted an Nvidia RTX 2080 card in it a few years ago and that's a 250W card.

Thanks for all the replies, 1300W PSU! Finally got the thing patched last night, tonight he's going to try Fortnite and we'll see how we get on.

My 12 y/o vocab seems to revolve around the term FPS and ping
