Android battery use notifications

There doesn't appear to be a general android help thread like other platforms have, so I'll start a new thread for this question.

I get irritatingly frequent notifications (sometimes several per day, sometimes a few days in between) along the lines of (I forget the exact wording):

android said:

(app) is using battery in the background, optimise battery use?

As far as I can tell 'Optimising' just seems to involve stopping those apps from running background processes, which I don't want to do as they are generally things like messenger or alarm clock apps which need to run background processes to function.

Is there a way to stop these annoying frequently repeated notifications?

Yes, for certain, but I'm not sure of the exact procedure on an Oppo.

I helped a friend with theirs last night to make a few things easier, and know enough that they've tweaked the Settings menu enough so as it's sufficiently different from what I'm used to.
