Taking my 5 year old skiing this winter, and although he is switched on, and I'm a pretty relaxed parent, in a ski resort, at -10 a lost kid is obviously all the more dangerous.

Combined with the fact I'll be leaving him in group lessons with instructors (who I trust of course, but wont be able to keep an eye out)

What is the best rechargeable/battery tracker out there that I can reliable access from my phone?

An airtag wont work as its delayed and relies on other peoples phones, lost him at a busy festival last year and my airtag was telling me it was last seen 30 mins ago where I was with him, which wasn't helpful,

Could I just chuck my airpods in his pocket, or do they work on the same basis as an airtag?

Ta smile

Perhaps get one of those GPS pet trackers?

Something like this? https://www.pitpat.com/gps-tracker/

£150 though, but it’s a small price to pay for peace of mind

As above, I think a pet tracker would be the simplest solution that gives you precise GPS location.

Otherwise, I'd use a smartphone with Strava Beacon - added benefit of having Strava track your movements, speed etc.. which can be interesting.
Or even just use Whatsapp live location.

You'd probably want to have the phone plugged into an external battery to extend it's life, but you could fit all that in a ski jacket or small backpack,

Does he have his own phone or can he - even if it's borrowing one for a week?

Last time I went skiing we all downloaded Life360 that gives live location, wasn't too data or battery heavy. No kids, but it was useful for meeting up with my MIL who wasn't skiing but town-hopping, and keeping tabs on each other going down different runs

This is the same as their magnetic car trackers (they just fit it in a magnetic box) - they work well and you get an app for your phone

Handy for locating various bits of kit in addition to children, like when you leave your car at a garage etc.

Added complexity of him being 5, so not having a phone or any idea how to use one, I dont have a spare either

I found this, which looks interesting and has the added benefit of him actually liking it, it has games etc on it, just not sure about the reliability or coverage as it may be a bit of a gimmick

What's the cell coverage like on ski slopes though? I guess these days they have good coverage, but best to check before spending any money.

One of my neighbours recommended this to me. May be a bit over the top for a holiday but looks like a good bit of kit.

If anyone wants 15% off these, drop me a message as I have some single use codes.

We had a pet tracker on a Spaniel we were looking after. When he chased off after a pheasant it proved to be completely useless, just telling us where he was about an hour before he disappeared! We had to use the old fashioned method of striding across fields shouting (fortunately he's not called Fenton).

I certainly wouldn't depend on it for a kid
