As the title really, which is best antivirus for a pc and laptop running windows 7pro.
Currently got Norton, but it’s on auto renew and they want £90.
Mcafee needs windows 10.
So do I cancel the Norton and just get another £15 norton 360.
Or is there something better?

I seem to recall using the free Microsoft one when I was running Windows 7. Or won't that work on there any more?

Use Microsoft Security Essentials

It still updates, and is still a good solution for Windows 7. The above download link is from Microsoft.

Thanks for the replies, I thought Microsoft did not support windows 7 anymore?

Can you not upgrade to Win 10, you can buy win 10 licenses for cheap if look around. Windows 7 support ended years ago.

If not, then run a VM with Ubuntu or similar Linux and use that for web browsing. Or Firefox with high security set, and additional security addons.

you know you are speaking to someone that pays for Norton right? Most of what you posted above is in another language to him :--)

Microsoft don't support Windows 7 anymore, but they do still support the Security Essentials product, as it's essentially the same product used to protect Windows 8 / 10 / 11 now.

“Most of what you posted is a foreign language!” 🤣🤣Had to laugh, it’s exactly what I thought when I read it!
So basically I’m ok just with that Microsoft security, and it’s free, and I’ve been wasting my money all these years using mcafee and Norton?
I don’t really want to update to 10, just cos I’m very used to using what I’ve got, and it does what I want it to.

The trouble is that it might well stop doing what you want it to, as it's no longer being patched to cover new vulnerabilities etc. Would recommend updating to a current OS that is still supported.

Please think carefully before browsing Internet on Windows 7. Would strongly suggest upgrade to Win10. If not, ensure you use Chromium / Firefox / not Internet Explorer.

Microsoft Essentials is fine.

Yes, Norton has been a waste of money.

The real problem you face, is that the various web browsers are no longer supported on Windows 7.

As such, you won't be protected against web page exploits (and most anti virus programs won't protect you against that either).

At least with Windows 10 and later, you will have access to the latest web browser technology.

With respect, given your apparent lack of understanding of computers, I suggest you upgrade to Windows 10, which will give you access to the latest web browsers (most with built in protection and detection against web based nasties - albeit basic, but a good supplement to the Microsoft bundled antivirus software).

P.S. I respect your desire to continue using Windows 7 - I myself carried on using it for a couple of years after support ceased - however I'm and IT professional, and have a fair idea of knowing when something isn't right on a website etc.

I see, you don't want to take it to Currys in-case they find your porn collection on it biggrin

It's very much more of the same from Windows 7 to Windows 10 so nothing to be scared of. And windows 10 is supported by Microsoft to October 2025 so 2 years ish.

Alternatively if you have win 7, your machine is probably 5 years old or older, so it would be sensible to buy a new one as one day your current one will stop working. So either upgrade or preemptively buy a new Windows 11 or Apple machine and keep the current one as a emergency spare.

lol :-)

yeah don't pay for Norton,as long as you are not high risk torrenting which I very much doubt. However....

Upgrade to 10 or 11. It's dead easy and cheap. And it all works much the same. In fact Win 7 users kicked up such a fuss about the changes that 10 and 11 look much the same (but better)

Upgrade to Windows 10 and ditch the anti-virus. I've not run any AV for years now, just don't click on any suspicious links or browse dodgy sites...

Live on the Wild Side with 0Patch: https://0patch.com

Adds something to the AV, careful computing behind a perimeter might be OK. You're more likely to get hacked off when software support drops on browser and so on....

Love the PistonHeads thought process, that’s telling me to buy two new computers!
Bit like getting a puncture, and nearly talking myself into buying a new car the other day! It did end up with me buying 4 new Goodyear vector tyres!
Anyway, I don’t use the pc or laptop for dodgy websites, I do use the laptop for organising and storing photos, backed up to a hard drive. They both also get used for shopping, mostly bike parts, researching how to fix bikes etc. Route planning, booking hotels, campsites etc.
They are both decent HP computers, and seem to have more than enough ability to do what I want.
So from all the advice so far, it seems best idea is update to 10 , then use Microsoft security essentials?
It seems you use to be able to do this for free, but now you can’t.
Exactly how do I upgrade them to 10?

Yes, that did seem a little enthusiastic!!

Unfortunately, you've now missed the chance for a free upgrade, it was open for around seven years, so I guess fair enough they've now closed it. That will mean you need to buy a newer version of Windows, either 10 or 11 if your PC spec is ok with it. If you are not particularly IT literate, it might be wise to ask a local IT business to assist, most towns seem to have a PC specialist who won't charge a fortune to sort it for you.

Firstly, Microsoft Security Essentials (now known as 'Virus and threat protection') is bundled with Windows 10 & 11, so no additional installation is required.

If your Windows 7 system is legitimate, the possibility of a free upgrade might still exist.

This link explains how to obtain and install Windows 10.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/...

EDIT: Sorry, it's no longer free to upgrade. However if you look hard enough you can find cheap keys.
