... how long do you need to quit a service for before you typically count as a 'new customer'?

Scoping out some replacement BB deals for my ripoff BT one (coz I stupidly remained loyal since 2006) and VM are the best in my area but I do have a 'pay monthly' deal on cablemodem at the place I rent for work.

I'm planning on stopping that anyway and replacing with 4G/5G router as it's too expensive for the amount of use I get out of it. For that matter, I could do the same in my house for a while and quit BT.

How long can I expect before I qualify as a new customer though?

Just give them a call and tell them you're thinking of switching to another provider. Check a site like Uswitch to see what deals are available for your area. That should also tell you what BT's new customer deal is, and I would bet that they'll ask if you sign up for another 2 years you'll get the new customer deal as well. Should take no more than 5 minutes

Long term BT customer here. Every now & then I give them a call and tell them I'm paying too much, I don't even have to suggest I'll leave, they just give me the new customer deal.

When I left Virgin after 20 years (I had been with them since the NTL/Telewest days) the nice man told me that after 3 months I would qualify as a new customer for offers etc.

But as others have said - just ring them up and tell them that you're thinking of leaving and what can they do...

BT a year ago: The monthly phone bill seemed high, so gave BT a call... apparently, the two year contract had expired.

Their response was:
“As a loyal customer, we can save you £4 a month... but it will go up on April 1st by AT LEAST the cost of inflation”.
( Went up above inflation)

Well Thanks a bundle.

Long term BT customer here.

For a few years now, I've received offers annually, normally around April, which meant that any increases were cancelled and a number of times more. The offer this year meant a <£2 reduction, but still down.

When I've upgraded for, for instance, more TV channels, I've always got a better deal than originally offered. I've always wonder if, when they pull my file, they see a description of me as 'Persistent Bugger'. I like to think I've earned it. It pays I think.

I've since been changed to EE. I wonder if they will still be as accommodating.

BT package includes: second fastest broadband, TV with Netflix, Now and Prime, two mobiles sim-only, BT Voice, so I'm entitled I think.
