Sat idly browsing some sort of GPS tracking / call making watch for my 6yr old. He’s not getting a phone, no chance… and my wife seems bemused by my suggestion of gluing an AirTag to him, so these seem… ok…?

I’d like him to have the ability to call us and vice versa, granted he doesn’t get let loose alone but I’m starting to think he’s of an age and can be in situations where being able to call certain people if need be is a good thing.

SpaceTalk watches seem to fit the bill but just before I stab the buy button, any alternatives with considering or any pitfalls to be aware of?

Cheers

We bought one around 6/7 for the missus lad, he wore it for about a week then it was chucked in the draw and never seen again. He got a phone at 11.

Thanks.

Put a bit more thought into this and ultimately, it’s not something I’d want / expect him to wear 24/7 however there are situations where I think it could be good for him… and me.

He goes to my Mum’s semi-regularly, school holidays etc etc and she usually takes him out for the day. Great, we’re lucky to have that option but a couple of years back she had a brief TGA incident, she’s been fine since but it did heighten my concerns. Similarly my mother in law will take him and she’s a nightmare for leaving her phone in the house for hours on end.

Lately I’ve found myself getting more unsettled by the “What if…” mindset, getting more anxious that if something was to happen, he’s no direct way of contacting us… and at 6yrs old, I’m not sure how he’d react if he got lost or granny KO’d. I appreciate that’s maybe more my problem, but I do find it quite hard to not get consumed by said thoughts.

Hence, debating if the likes of a SpaceTalk watch would be beneficial for those situations. I wouldn’t want him wearing it to school or day in, day out but I think in some situations it could be a good thing. Or, if there’s a better suited alternative.

Probably with saying that I’d consider second hand, they can be had for £30 to £50 used… so fairly low cost and it only takes one situation where he needs to contact us in an emergency for it to be a priceless addition.

Not sure who I’m trying to convince here…
