I know nothing of computer games, hardware or software. My son wants a docking station for his steamdeck for Christmas. There seems to be quite a few 'compatible' ones on Amazon etc for about £30 or so, or the steam own one for £69.

My inclination is always to get the one that's made for it, but why waste money. Are the compatible ones likely to be ok, or am I asking for problems and 'buy cheap, buy twice' ?

I have the JSAUX dock - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0B9QVZB86 and it works well, does exactly what it should and does come highly reviewed. It is more the case that the Valve one is overpriced slightly to cater for the fact the Deck is relatively cheap.

I have no issues recommending the JSAUX dock (and they make loads of other peripherals as well).

I have the same jsaux dock. It's absolutely fine, works well and seems well made. Also have no issues recommending it.

The official dock is a safe bet. It gets regular firmware updates via the deck, supports two video outputs and also can do Variable Rate Refresh with a compatible TV. Also comes with its own charger plug (identical to the one with the deck) which is handy.

My official dock doesn’t work very well with my AV setup. I have to recycle the power to the dock to get it to display on the TV. It’s a common problem.
