14 yo daughter is currently using a very aged Chromebook for homework and constantly moand about how crap it is. Which is a fair point.

Usage requirements are quite basic really.

Access to cloud based education platforms.

Access to a word-processing and presentation option. Currently using the Google versions, just clunky on the current platform. I want to avoid having to sign up for an O365 subscription, feels like overkill. I assume Google sheets etc will run much better on a newer device.

She's a youth, so all apple stuff is cool, even though we are exclusively Android in our house.

She's actually a superb singer, and starting to learn to compose bits of stuff on the keyboard. She thinks she wants garageband to facilitate her rise to stardom smile

She's got an Xbox for gaming so that's not needed

That's it really....I see laptops now as very much as a tool for work, ie pretty boring. So I have no idea what's good anymore.

So, with a budget of about £300.... what's do we recommend? Can all the above be done just as well/better on a windows laptop?

Oh and noticed you can get the older versions of office on cdkeys for about £20....that might be a good option.

Cheers folks.

Its going to be an old MacBook or MBA that you'll get for £300 - it'll still run as good if not better than a £300 windows laptop.

I would absolute recommend an MBA for her - they're excellent and nice and light too and battery life is excellent on both the older Intel and Apple silicone versions.

I picked up a cheap license for Office for Mac via Gamers-Outlet for about £12 IIRC, I would avoid Google suite of apps personally, but that's just me (but if she's using Google at school then obviously stick with it)
