My guess is it's just people seeking attention / "likes".

Probably compiling a list of gullible people who may be easily defrauded.

several of the groups I am in are constantly being spammed on FB.

The most common one I see is an almost begging post saying that someone is starting a car cleaning business. The text is identical every time, they follow their own post with a post saying you don't need to pay upfront, and if you didn't look too closely, it seems reasonable.

If you do look into the profile, the person usually has no more than one or two pictures and they are clearly in the US (cars and people). It's a fake profile, and I can only assume it ends up being a deposit scam.

I can't believe that FB with all of their smart people can't figure out that these posts are formulaic and ban them at source. It seems to me to be a relatively simple thing to code against. Same as the millions of fake cars for sale posts. They need a better way of getting rid of them.
