Need to build a (very) simple website for a business, only needs to contain basic contact info but haven't done this for 20+years.

In the past would create a HTML file with index.html or similar and FTP it to the webhost, but expect things have changed a lot....

There are loads of builders, but I already have a domain and host.

ICT is not my area...........Can anyone help with the basics of how this is done now?

just noticed my host has word press hosting...but I have to pay again for it.

I think I get 250GB hosting for my current package, but 100gb if I use wordpress, but i have to pay more for it.

If I use wordpress, the 250 is basically wasted?

It'll still be useful to use the 250 for file sharing though. So seperaltey I need to work out the FTP connection.

WordPress.com is free, with advertising (a few banners on the website). You'll get a domain name (yourname.wordpress.com). If you have your own domain already you can redirect it there.

I use it for my basic websites and it's great. Nice and easy and free. Also used to build my own, but I don't think there is much point for simple stuff any more.

You said it was a simple site. 250gb and simple site are not the same thing in any universe. Hell, if a simple site took more than a couple of hundred meg I'd be surprised.

E2A: If you self host Wordpress then all of the requirements for updates, installation and maint of plugins, security issues, are yours to own and deal with. Host it with Wordpress.com and it's on them to deal with. I'd pick them looking after it any day of the week.

That's my personal motoring blog. It's not for profit or business, just for fun so should be ok to post here.

If your hosting includes MySQL database you don't need to buy their Wordpress specific hosting, just FTP the Wordpress install files onto your hosting and answer a few questions and it's good to go.

True but as above don't neglect your security updates if you go this route. Wordpress is probably the most attacked hosting platform in the world and you do need to keep on top of it.

For a business website, I wouldn't recommend running free WordPress hosting on their subdomain. In fairness neither would I recommend WordPress, but each to their own; you pay your money, you take your choice I guess.

yourbusiness.wordpress.com - it screams amateur hour as much as "contact us at sexymike2001@aol.com" for your business email does. Plus you're not building age and authority for your domain, so if ever you move away (or even if in the future you decide to use your domain name) you'll be starting from scratch. I'd be amazed if there was any option to 301 redirect your WordPress subdomain to your new one. Therefore starting from scratch really does mean chucking all your existing search results in the bin and starting again.

You could use your domain with their paid option, but for hosting it's expensive for what it is - realistically you're going to be looking at the £20/month option. The £7 Premium option is about as premium as a can of Tennents Special Brew in the park at 8am.

OP wants a simple business website. They've also said ICT is not their thing and everyone is offering them SQL databases and self hosted Wordpress rolleyes

OP, you say you have a domain and a host. What does the host offer for your 250gb? does that include a website builder? If not, can you add a simple one?

If you tell us who the host is I'm sure someone can recommend the easiest way to create a simple business website without needing to become the next Tim Berners-Lee.

I would build one in Mobirise, personally - I have done a few for my businesses.

Very easy drag and drop of sections, adapts to devices.

Easy to add a Whatsapp contact button etc.

Which is exactly what I learnt on - and last used!

it's not really a business that generates money directly, but is an LTD, so just sitting on the domains really with some basic contact details.
