Am going abroad in a week or so's time, and will probably get a local SIM card on arrival as it's outside the EU and outside data roaming. Normally Whatsapp is linked to your phone number, so will Whatsapp not work with a foreign sim in the phone? Unfortunately I can't get an eSIM or have duel sim cards in this phone.

TIA

I did just that in HK last week. Not a problem as long as you already has an account created. Whatsapp only cares about your mobile number when you setup the account. After that, as long as you have internet then all works.

I went to usa and had a different sim in my phone and WhatsApp still worked as normal even though my number was different.

With WhatsApp it’s just that your username is the phone number you used to 2FA it initially.

After that point it’s the same as any other OTT messaging platform - as long as there is an internet connection it’s happy

It will just work as others have said. Whatever you do do not click change your number when the option pops up.

Just put the simcard in and carry on using it.

Unrelated to whatsapp but have you thought of using an esim? More convenient than a local sim card IMO.

If my phone did eSim then yes.... as it doesn't have that function, then no. biggrin

At whatever point it's due an upgrade then be something to look for.

Thank you for all the other responses, will bang in a local sim and off we go.
