I’m with 3Mobile so roaming in Europe, the USA and some other countries is included in my plan.

I spend a lot of time in the USA so a US number would be useful. Thinking of getting a US eSim but wondering how that would work with my existing physical SIM card. If I make a phone call how would the phone know with SIm/phone number to call from?

Anyone here with experience of this?

You get an extra menu where you can turn lines off and, enable and disable roaming etc for data, and from memory a second menu to set which number is primary etc.

Thanks for that.

Do you know if I turn my UK line off will I still get incoming calls for that number?

If you turn the UK SIM off you won't get any calls on that number, however if your WhatsApp is tied to that number it will still work for messages/calls with the data from the other SIM/Wifi.

If using a US SIM, you may want to check if the network supports the required frequencies that the UK/EU phones require.

Wow, how do I do that? I have an unlocked iPhone 14 Pro.

You're probably okay then...as the later quad-band iPhones support US. I think it just misses out on some mmWave frequencies for ultra-fast 5G...but normal 5G/4G will be fine.

US version:
supports 5G NR (Bands n1, n2, n3, n5, n7, n8, n12, n14, n20, n25, n26, n28, n29, n30, n38, n40, n41, n48, n53, n66, n70, n71, n77, n78, n79); 5G NR mmWave (Bands n258, n260, n261); FDD LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 66, 71); TD LTE (Bands 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 46, 48, 53); UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz), [and] GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz).

UK/EU (Global) version:
supports 5G NR (Bands n1, n2, n3, n5, n7, n8, n12, n14, n20, n25, n26, n28, n29, n30, n38, n40, n41, n48, n53, n66, n70, n71, n77, n78 n79); FDD LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 66, 71); TD LTE (Bands 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 46, 48, 53); UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz); [and] GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz). It does not support 5G NR mmWave (Bands n258, n260, n261).

I’m not bothered about data as I can use my 3mobile data in the USA. It’d just be good to have a US number to make & receive local calls there.

Here is my thread from a few years back, will answer some of your questions.

When you dial out you can choose which number you use. You can assign a default number if you want. You can assign contacts to use a particular number if you want.
