Just looking at upgrading from a 2015 MacBook Pro (2.5 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM) to a MacBook Air 15" M2 (512GB SSD and 8GB ram) via Sky Mobile.

Sadly 16gb ram isn't upgradeable. through Sky. Will it be an 'Upgrade" as I dont want a downgrade.

Thanks all.

Definitely. I upgraded from a 2019 Intel i7 MacBook Pro 16 inch to a M2 MBA 15inch, admittedly I carry it around a lot but performance wise it is faster (both stats online and how it feels) plus way better battery life.

My biggest concern is going from 16 to 8 go ram. Did you do the same?

Unified memory architecture - 8gb is the new 16gb 16gb is the new 32gb etc….

More important question is what is your use case? If it’s video editing then 8gb isn’t enough. If you are using it for an office machine then no problem

What are you using it for?

Mainly office based stuff but also the odd photograph/ video etc. the MBP struggled when I plugged a GoPro into it.

You’ll be fine. The machine you were working on was a good machine when it was new, but it is now 8 or 9 year old tech, things have moved on

16gb is always better than 8gb but for your use case, 8gb will be ok

I suspect Sky also can’t sell you a 16gb machine, they are probably limited to the “standard” specs which are 8gb on MBA 15”

I wouldn't be too concerned, as the Apple 'M' architecture uses RAM completely differently.

Personally, I found my biggest question was around the size of the SSD.

Thank you. I'd be going for 512gb which is plenty for my usage with iCloud as a backup.
