It’s only 3 years old! Before I take it somewhere expensive does anyone have any tips.

It’s charged but just doesn’t come on - no sound no screen

You could send it into a Apple Authorised Service Provider (there’s a few out there, or DM me and i’ll share details) they’ll probably charge you about £70 to plug it into Apple’s systems and get a full diagnosis/quote for repair if a repair is needed

There are some good independant mac repair specialists that would be worth looking at as well, much cheaper than apple if it is out of warranty.

What seems to be wrong with it?

You could speak to apple, can take abit of arguing though, but you never know.

One of the benefits of sending into an authorised apple repair centre is that they plug the machine into Apple’s diagnostic tools which then tell them if there is an extended repair program available (I.e. a free repair).

That’s not possible at an independent (neither is using official apple parts, only the authorised places get the official parts, everyone else is reliant on eBay/chinese knock offs

Thats utter rubbish, what model is it?

I have had Macs for a long time and tbh, I doubt I'll go with one next for a home device, they fall to bits, the batteries don't last and have become more expensive.

I think that's a bit excessive, MacBooks have been incredibly reliable and I've never had one physically fall apart.

I suspect it's Dave's constant use that's caused it to fail, there's only so much Tik Toking a laptop can sustain wink

Lol no TikTokking on it, it’s used in marketing.
It’s in great condition just totally dead - won’t come on, yes it’s charged.

Should I tiktok my MacBook bust? It got me a free pair of Mahabis lol

We run them in a corporate environment (8000 Macs) and see no such issues; they last longer than comparable PCs.

Yeh where you circulate them every 1/2 years and don't notice.

I didn't say PCs were any better, I said Macs were overpriced for what you now get build wise.

In real terms, cost per horsepower, they are cheaper than ever. A MacBook has never been better value, especially if you can deploy MacBook Air M2 machines, simply awesome business tools which people love. Windows is very expensive to deploy, support and manage and they don't last as long as a Mac.

if the device is bought from Apple then they are usually quite friendly about getting it working, especially if it looks well looked after. It's always good to stand your ground and remain polite.....they will ask around the staff and management in an Apple store.

there are other aspects where they are a bit useless but these are not on-topic smile

We don't. Most users keep them for 5 years or longer according to my support lead. They also cost less to support.

Wife had a 14-inch MacBook Pro, same thing. Just wouldn't turn on, Apple said water damage and wanted £1299 to fix. She bought a 15-inch MacBook Air instead.

Never knowingly spilled anything on it and it looked perfect from the outside, motherboard was corroded so no idea what happened.

Inside is water detection stickers on MacBooks, try and find them!

Not saying you should do this, but if it turns out to be something expensive and not blameable on you then Apples warranty does state that in the U.K. your consumer rights are not affected IIRC…. In other words they may accept the cost of the repair or part of it as you can claim it has broken in a timescale not reasonable if it’s within 6 yrs from delivery. (5 years in Scotland) ….

See
https://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/...
For details…..

Tried the external power supply, an external monitor, and held down the power key for 10 seconds.

Do any of the lights cycle, on keyboard etc ?

There are also a list of Firmware reset, SMC reset key combos.

Had an op today, too tired to look them up - Google Mac Reset keys etc

With that diagnosis she probably could have claimed on the house insurance.
