Do I need a landline?
Discussion
Morning Everyone. Apologies if this has been done to death, but we have Virgin Media. It provides us with 2 cable boxes, internet & wifi and as part of the package we have an O2 mobile phone deal that gives us unlimited data, texts and calls.
Virgin also provides our home landline, which we haven't used for months, do I need it?
Many thanks, Simon.

Is your landline an analogue one connected to an old BT line coming into the house?
If so you'll also probably be shortly informed that your analogue landline will be disappearing, and you'll get a dongle to fit your Hub which will let you connect your landline to the digital phone system.
Just done mine, and it was a 2 minute job...although you have to leave the power to the Hub and phone on at all times...otherwise there is no phone line. Probably not a problem to those who live on mobiles, and there is a battery backup option available for those who have a specific need for an always on system (medical devices, alarms, etc.).

My mother was recently informed she's going to be moved over to this. As she lives a mobile phone deadzone, it means if her internet falls over she'll have no way of contacting anyone without walking to the top of the hill. I can see why they're doing it but it's not good for some people.I've got BT. My previous landline number was transferred to BT Voice that came with a a 'back-up' system should there be a power cut. It would only work for a short period of time.
For us it's useful as we have a 'family' phone and have our own mobiles. The alternative would be a third mobile. A rough calculation showed that with the offer I got from BT, it was cheaper with BT Voice. It came with two Voice phones. No problems so far.

The times I've been on Virgin it was usually cheaper to take the promo bundle of TV/phone/internet than it was to just take (usually not discounted) internet.
The traditional BT "phone line" will be dead soon, you'll either have fibre to the premises or SoGEA (which is like ADSL/VDSL over the copper line but without the phone bit). Either way if you want to plug in a phone and make calls then it's a digital voice service on top.
I've not had a phone plugged in for years, even my retired parents would rather use mobile or Facetime instead of a landline call.

Depends if you don't use you have probably answered your own question.
Having said that I moved to about 18 months ago and got Digital voice for literally £2 more a month. It's regularly used and works fine for us

I deleted the reference when i backspaced editted the post before posting
They wanted an extra £5 for the digital voice phone but I got them to reduce that to £2

Does anyone under the age of 70 still have a landline? I've not had one for almost 30 years......(since 1996) and not even thought for one second I would want one.
Lots of people. There are thousands of fire & burglar alarms which have connections to an analogue phone line & thousands of personal care alarms like fall alarms which also use the analogue system.Every fax is going to have to be junked as well as there will be no replacement & while it's certainly a dying technology that's a lot of kit heading for landfill/recycling.
