As title

Like most I get a lot of spam calls. Sometimes I can be quick enough to google the number while its still ringing.

As an example - my garage called me from a different (mobile) number to usual while my car was in.
I was quick enough to google it and see who it was in time to answer it.

Most are recorded as spam on the varoius web sites and I ignore then block them

Is there an app that can do this lookup live as it were?

My (Samsung/Android) automatically does this - Phone settings, turn on "Caller ID and spam protection" - it could be that simple (it uses Hiya apparently).

Any number that isn’t in my contacts get booted to voicemail.

If it’s that important they’ll leave a message.

...and on Pixel phones (certainly since the 6 Pro) you get Call Screening as well where the Google Assistant answers the call and asks the caller why they're calling. It then transcribes this for you on-screen.

A spam caller will just hang up at that point, it works very well.

This - it works really well giving a real time indication of who the incoming caller is (name of business if known) or identifying it as potential spam.

Yeah this function is very good for weeding them out.

Legit businesses will show up in caller ID as well.

I have this on my phone settings, but it doesn't seem to identify the spam/scam calls where the number is being spoofed.

I had a call today from Manchester which was from my mobile provider offering me a 30% discount. The guy on the phone did not have English as his first language which is always a clue and was probably calling from a country in the East and not Manchester.

Surely there must be a way of flagging up if a number is spoofed.

If you have an iPhone there is an app called TrueCaller. To get it ad-free you have to pay £2.99pm but if you don't mind ads it's free.
