Quick question, do PoE cameras require any special standard/special features on the other end of the cable? I am putting one in the garage, which will terminate at the router, and would prefer PoE rather than having to connect a power supply to the camera as well. The router is a very basic free one which came with the internet deal years ago, so is unlikely to have any "high power" settings for the ethernet ports.

You'll need a PoE capable switch, or PoE injector.

I'd go for a PoE switch rather than a separate injector if you think there is even a chance of adding further items over time.

For me, I have all of my PoE devices connected to the one switch.

3 reolink cameras, a poe doorbell, and 4 Wi-Fi repeaters all neatly plugged into a single switch in the utility room.
