I'm using a BT Youview box here, but it's not connected to the network (the location is a bit tricky to get a cable to) so I can't comment on that side of things. When I first got it, it was by far the quickest Freeview recorder I'd had, but it's slowed down a lot now there's a lot of recordings on it. It was a fiver from the car boot, and the one on the downstairs TV was free from a Facebook recycle group, so I can't say I did that much research on other models. Disturbing that you say "as they all do", as I think this is Humax inside.

We’ve one of these and it’s fine

I’m not sure about Ethernet functionality, I’ve never needed to use. The app that goes with it is crap.

Sorry OP for jumping in but that sounds ideal for what I need. I've also got an old Humax that needs an ethernet cable. I currently use TP link powerline adapters but the broadband is forever dropping in and out. I originally thought it might be a router problem but nothing else seems to be suffering so, from what you've said about the 8 year failure point, I wonder if it's the box itself giving up the ghost. If I could use WiFi and not bother with the cable that might be problem solved.
Does the Aura effectively do the same as the old ones but better?

The BTness of BT boxes isn't in your face. It's largely irrelivant.

We have a Manhattan youview box which is fast and works well but we have had crashing issues when it's library of recordings grows, and now the hdmi socket is failing and you have to have the cable under downward pressure for it to work. About 4 years old. Looking at the 4k BT box , refurb, to replace it. HAd the older non 4k version of it before the Manhattan and it was great.

There's a lot of useful discussion here:

The Aura & the Manhattan are the latest units but they each have advantages & drawbacks.

Usually it’s failing hard drives causing the problems.
Plenty of guides online about how to replace them.

The BT boxes are pretty good, the supplied apps are supported (iPlayer, 4,5 players etc work) unlike many smart tvs which get outdated.
You don’t see much ‘BT-ness’ on screen either and the app allows remote recording schedule which is useful at times.

I've got one and couldn't figure out how to record a series the other day. I know rfm.

But you can watch anything you've saved from any device on the same wifi network which might be useful.
