Hi Guys.

I've just put WhatsApp on my chromebook and I can't download anything, beit pics or audio recordings?

The pics sent through messages are there but completely blurred?

When I try to download it comes up "Download unable to complete. Please tryagain later".

Typed messages exchanges work fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance. R.

Did you install the android app from the Play Store by any chance? If yes, remove it/uninstall it.

You should be using the web app version of WhatsApp on Chrome OS.

Go to web.whatsapp.com and follow the instructions it offers to link your devices. Downloads etc etc will all work correctly then.

ETA;
In case it's not clear after following the WhatsApp instructions when you have your account and messages open go to the Chrome browser menu and somewhere in that menu you'll see an item which says Install Application (it might also prompt you from the omnibar if you're quick enough to notice the prompt. This will save the WhatsApp web app as an application in your app drawer. You can pin it to the shelf or do anything else you normally do with your app icons.
The most useful thing you can do with WhatsApp is right click the app icon and select Open as New Window rather than New Tab, but the choice is yours.

No worries.

With Chrome OS the rule is always web apps first.
In most instances it's Android apps only if there's no other option.

It's the one thing I wish Google had handled better with Chrome OS - they should've somehow made it clearer that both the android and Linux environments exist to offer flexibility and special use cases.
As it is, people find the Play Store and automatically assume it's how to install apps on Chrome OS. Can't blame end users for that really. Google should've handled it better. The Play Store / Android environment is there to offer flexibility. It's a but like running an emulator or virtual machine within Windows or Mac OS. It exists and it's useful, but it's not the native environment.

Firstly thanks for your replies and contributions.

My first installation (which was where the problem showed itself) was set up in desktop mode where it is simple to resize the screen to display fully.
Since then I've reinstalled in tablet mode but haven't tried it yet to see if it resolves the problem...!
However, it seems that by what Corso Marche says this is wrong? Sure I'll get it sorted!
Will update later smile

Yep, resizable/tablet/phone modes are just ways of handling android apps in a non-native windowed desktop environment.
Ditch the android version, and just use the web app version.

Once the web app is installed, right click the WhatsApp icon and set it to open in it's own window rather than a tab. I've email, Drive, Messages, Docs/Sheets etc etc etc all set to have their own app windows. It's easier as with a large monitor or multi display setup I can have multiple apps displayed simultaneously.
And the Chrome browser with a bookmark bar is used just as that - a web browser for surfing the web.
