TomTom updates ?
Discussion
My wife presented me with her SatNav from her car and said "can you update this with new maps", an old TomTom Go 50 I think, I hadnt seen it in ages, it seems to be missing the road built since WW2. I said uses your phone, but no she wont use her phone with its real time traffic and map updates, speed camera warnings and all that, she wants this bin fodder updating.
I had a look on the TomTom Website and its £45 for life map updates or £40 for one update, is that the only way to bring it up to date ? Annoys me having to pay £40 to update something thats worth 10p because "I dont like using my phone, and I need to go to Londinium next week"
Is there way round paying £40 or is it the only way ?
Maps are from 2016 !

Maybe get her to do it if it's so important? Or is she one those wives that can't do anything for herself?
She is pretty independent and resourceful, unless its IT related and then because I work in IT I am expected to drop whatever I was doing and sort it out tat second because its my fault, or thats what it feels like. See also car related things, dead things on the lawn and going to the bar to get a round of drinks, its funny how they are feminists until involves getting their purses out or doing something dirty or unpleasant (yes, even that )This isnt getting updated, and I am certainly not paying for it, I pay for her phone bill so can learn to use that, still has CD's in her car yet has used Spotify for like seven years.
If there was some unofficial method I would do it, but fk spending forty quid on a st old Sat Nav.
Are you sure it didn't come with lifetime updates when you got it? Try plugging it into a computer, you'll need to download mydrive-connect and set-up an account and log-in.

I use a TomTom daily, I find it easier to have a separate device, but I do drive around a lot for work. Mine is newer and syncs to my phone for traffic etc.

I tried this a few years ago. The download took nearly an hour and then I was presented with 'insufficient memory to complete the task' or similar. Never did get a refund
Sometimes the internal memory is not sufficient for the map size, I use an SD card for storing the full European maps. I'm sure I recall reading that TomTom have an interesting definition of "lifetime" when it comes to free map updates. There was a thing a few years back ("a few" might be ten) where they'd announced no further updates for a certain set of devices, and I don't recall whether they went back on their decision.
By total coincidence i updates the other halfs Go 50 tom tom yesterday.
It hadnt been done in a very long time, maybe 2017.
I had to remove everything off it first, then scroll through the free map options to find one that would fit on the device.
Seems to be working well enough now.
