I've finally lost patience with my existing VR setup (Oculus Quest 2 with link cable for the PC) so it's getting sold off and I'll replace it with something else. Some folks I play online with recommended the Valve Index - new prices are off-putting but apparently well looked-after examples go on eBay for money that I can justify so thinking along those lines.

I only ever play PC VR, seated in front of the desk so I'm concerned about placement of the base/tracking stations - particularly as the ceiling is sloped down behind the monitor so I can't place them very far away from where I sit, nor any higher up. Is this likely to cause issues at all?

If the cable is the reason for getting rid of the Quest 2, have you tried using the Wi-fi link? I've played MSFS with my Quest 2 wirelessly and it's brilliant.

I did try that but as I have a mesh Wifi system it didn't seem to work at all at first, was really, really laggy. I disabled the mesh functionality for the Quest 2 and tied it to the closest mesh node (in the same room, 6ft away at most) and that improved the display tracking (still not as good as wired though) but the hand controller tracking was awful. Non-starter for me unfortunately.

However it's not the cable that's the issue, I can't get it to do the wired link any more than one time in 20 attempts - the Windows app starts and detects the headset but the Quest Link app in the headset just fails to start. The Windows sound devices for the internal headphones and microphone keep getting disabled for some reason. Settings in the Windows app keep changing themselves. Those are just the main, current issues, there's never been a time where it just worked without some hassle or other.
