I have BT Broadband with a Smart Hub 2. It works brilliantly.

Here's the issue...

My OH is one of those airy fairy pseudo science evangelists who, among other things, thinks we'll be vaporised by EMF if she doesn't put a mesh bag over the wi-fi router to stop it. Unfortunately, this also stops the wi-fi signal, or at least reduces it to something tantamount to dial-up. Is there a way to boost the signal in the spare room upstairs where I WFH?

Important info...

We're currently renting so I can't have solutions that involve drilling holes, installing wires, etc. If there were a device which I could plug into one of the Ethernet ports on the router which would then "broadcast" the signal itself, and could be hidden on the back of a shelf on the cabinet where the router sits, that would do it!

You have a metal mesh bag covering your router?

So she doesn't use the wi-fi? If it is only you using it can you not just change the password, hide the SSID, and tell her you have "turned off the wifi" on the router (which you could do anyway) and that you are only using 4/5g on your phone?

Alternatively, you could turn off the router wi-fi and then use powerline adaptors to take the ethernet to your office and then use a wireless access point or mesh point to broadcast it up there. It would still likely be showing through the rest of the house though unless you do above re hiding the SSID for the one in your office.

Have you considered doing a wifi sweep and showing here that there is no getting away from wifi?
Show here the 15 other wifi signals beaming through your home.

Also, tell her the EMF coming from the phones in the house will kill well before the wifi.

Switch off the Wifi on the router and ethernet in using a powerline router?

Uses your home power circuit as a network.

Personally I reckon if a simple and cheap tech solution exists, it’s not worth a fight. Best advice I ever got when I first got married was to pick your battles.

It's not metal, it's one of these...

Yes, she's on it all the time, but she sits in the lounge close to the router so her connection is adequate. I'm always having to partly uncover it so I can get a good enough signal upstairs, but I'd rather just find a way to circumvent it.

It doesn't have aerials.

Mercifully we're not married and I have just recently reached a point where I can, for the first time in my life, afford to buy my own place and live comfortably, so this may well be the way forward!

Trust me, she's neurotic enough!

Absolutely bonkers. Any solution is just going to negate the bag over the route being used.

Its surprising they haven't sold out of those bags at that price with the emf being so dangerous :

I can only assume some people have no idea how things work if they fall for stuff like this.

Network over powerline device pair to get a wired connecton up to the spare room and then a USB-Ethernet adapter presuming the device you are working on doesn't have an ethernet port.

Alternatively, if she is out at work when you're WFH, can you move the EMF screen?

There's an old saying mem marry women hoping they never change, women marry men hoping they do.

Another router. Turn the wifi off on your main router, configure the new one as a switch and use the same ssid and password as before. Stick it out of sight.
https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/turn-old-route...

Sticking a bag oiver a router is batst crazy, so consider how someone who thinks that's a good idea will react if they find out.

read this, then send her the link. https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevent...

The best way to protect herself from EMF is a suit of armour, preferably with a constant ground connection. After all its not going to go down well if you ask her to wear a bag smile

Check your contract to see if you are eligible for their range extender discs. We have three (you have to request one at a time) and they work very well.

You can just buy these and they work with any Wi-Fi. I use them with Fibre. Obviously the same problem will be present though, if lunatic is covering route then surely would do same with discs?
