Need some advice from you tech gurus...

So I switched from BT to another company for fibre and they gave me a Fritz! Router (?). Seem to be having Wi-Fi issues (connection disappears) ever since and wondered if these routers are not rubbish or if it could be something else?

If it is a garbage router, any suggestions for a reasonable replacement? Just need to surf the net, nothing fancy!

Thanks smile

Could be loads of reasons. Zen your new ISP?

By connection disappears do you mean the WiFi network stops showing up on your devices?

Fritz are usually rather good, much better than the usual rubbish router boxes ISPs give away.

I have 2 Fritz routers and a Fritz mesh and it's been utterly reliable up to now, although a recent lightning strike has frazzled something for one of them! Openreach say the line is now good and haven't had another look at it since they were here this morning.

Zen? They inisit on using it, but IME it was a bit st. If you are on FTTP it has the modem built in, so unless you buy an equivalent with a router built in then you are somewhat stuck with the Fritz Box - however you can use it simply as a modem and buy a different system (such as netgear Orbi) for the wifi, and simply run a cable from the Fritz to the Orbi's "Internet" port and use it for WiFi.

Thanks for the responses, correct it was a switch to Zen for gaming latency reasons.

I have fibre straight through to premises (or whatever it is called).

My iPad and iPhone simply don’t see the network on occasions and that never happened with BT. Also with BT I could easily get a signal in my garage but that doesn’t seem to be possible now.

Thinking I might need something that gives off a more powerful signal.

I’m a Zen user with Fritz box, I use a Deco mesh and have no issues with speed or access

Try manually setting the WiFi channel. It has a channel scan function in the settings that will show you how congested each band is. For 5Ghz set to 36 or 44, higher channels might be running into dfs issues. For 2.4ghz set to 1, 6 or 11 depending on which is the least congested and make sure it isn’t set to a lower power level if range is the issue.

Try turning off band steering on the Wi-Fi side of the router. iPhones can be a bit snippy with Wi-Fi tech.

Speak with Zen support & see if you can persuade them to swap out the router if diagnosing the fault fails to remedy.

No serious gamer would use wireless surely!?

Any latency advantage provided by FTTP etc. is lost.

Agreed, Fritz boxes are better than most customers are given! It's very unlikely to be the cause of the problem.

Same here, on Zen and no problems with a Fritz Router.

I would take a WiFi scan and check for channels etc.. Plus ensure you're checking fairly close to the router, in the first instance.

I've got a mesh connected to it as well, for most of the house.

Thanks, I will speak to zen if the suggestions don’t yield anything.

The conversation was centred around WiFi so a (probably rash) assumption in my part.

I'll get me coat.

Our whole house is on a Fritz! Mesh. It’s stable as anything so it’s unlikely to be any less good than any other free router that an ISP would give you.
