Wife needs a new phone, her old Samsung S9 is no longer secure enough for her work email to be supported.

She doesn't want to spend much more than £300 or so, smallish screen, supported for updates for a couple of years at least. Android. Is there anything apart from a Pixel 6a that fits the bill at this price point?

Samsung A54? Seems to be coming in under the price point.

Galaxy A34 if you want to stay with Samsung, but the screen is a bit bigger (6.6" v 6.1"). Pixel 6a is probably the best option, unless there are any deals on a 7a.

7a was on the list although it's a bit pricey, but for some reason it seems to have two years less software support from Google than all the other Pixels..?

Nokia X30.

Only problem is it's now a year old model. However Nokia have promised 2 years of updates (effectively 2 versions of Android) and 3 years of security updates.

It's vanilla Android, decent HW and £250.

I've a Nokia X10 and they've keep their promises on the updates.

I've been on the lookout for a new phone for the past months, and I notice Pixel 6a is now £299 (on Google website). Am tempted to pull the trigger myself, but it will also entail additional expense for a home and in-car charger too.

olata?

I also think Pixel 6a is the obvious choice for £300 and something small.

Pixel 6a will get OS updates till July 2025 and security updates till 2027
Pixel 7a will get OS updates till May 2026 and security updates till 2028

Other options are to look at "Android One" phones, think Nokia made some, they have really stock Android on them, even more stock than Pixel devices. But I dont think their support is as long as the Pixel devices.

There is a list of One phones on the wikipedia page

I've for an Honor 70 which looks very similar to this. The phone is brilliant and cost £269, I really don't understand why people need to spend £1K+ on a phone.

Same reason you dont need a Ferrari or Lambo, a Dacia Sandero does the same job.

I tend to stick to mid range now aka Pixel devices (not the pro) but I used to get the newest stuff out.

I however would/will go for more highend when Google finally enable desktop mode (where you dock the phone) and it becomes a fully fledged desktop. I know this is in development and Samsung have Dex.

I got a Oneplus Nord 2 and it has been fine, nice screen, good speakers and warp charge is decent to charge in 20 minutes from empty.

Yes, I reckon that is the future. Will replace laptops and desktops for most people.

Surely she should just take whatever her work give her that will support her work email.

Some employees are suckers, some employers are scum, BYOD can FRO in these instances.

Her employer is great, tks for asking. This is simply a question of personal choice. She could have a work phone and a personal phone, but prefers to just have one. The work phones are iPhones and she doesn't like them.

So, new android phone, and no hand wringing required.
