I've got a XR50X90s Sony television and I want to record onto a hard drive. I've got an external drive, which is plugged in and registered with the tele. The manual says that you just press the red record button - but my remote doesn't have a record button on it! I've googled everything I can think of but made no progress. Anyone got any ideas please?

Is it the original remote? Our Samsung one has it. And that's now 9 years old.

Yes. I got the TV last year with two remotes, and neither has it!

It was brand new with two different remotes? something fishy here.

Not at all. Brand new and boxed from John Lewis!

Are you sure it has an on-demand recording feature and not a timer based recording from the EPG?

Hmm interesting, thanks. I didn't realise there were different variations. I'll give that a go.

I’ve noticed more TV’s coming with a simple remote and a more “complex” remote.

You probably need the remote on THIS page:

To get around that, most TVs have apps that you can download that emulate a remote control. Maybe try downloading a Sony TV remote app?

Fair enough. I've not bought one for 9 years!

I've downloaded a random app for controlling it, with a record button, and it works! It'd be nice to have an official Sony one, but it'll do for now! Cheers.

Isn’t the record button a virtual on screen one?

Where is record button on Sony remote?
(When using the Touchpad Remote Control, press the Control Bar ( ), slide the touchpad to highlight the REC button, then press the touchpad to select.) Recording starts and automatically stops at the end of the programme. To stop recording manually, press the button.

There isn't one. I've checked down the back of the sofa and everything.

There is one. But you need the remote you don't have - the one I linked to above.

I've discovered that if I press and hold the button in the middle of the direction ones, it comes up with the option to record.
