My 80 something dad has one of those old nokia type phones and really struggles with it. He doesn't really want to move to a smartphone as it's too complicated for him, but he's barely able to read anything on those tiny phones.

I want to set up an older iphone for him to be able to use as a basic phone, and maybe teach him how to use whatsapp.

Any suggestions for how to set it up? I was thinking of making the text larger and using faceID to unlock it. Also keeping the number of apps on the homepage very simple.

Some of the issues he will have is forgetting to lock and and accidentally calling people with his phone in his pocket.

Sounds like the right approach. Accessibility options etc.

My older family initially got our hand me downs. Got used to them quickly & now are completely proficient.

Simple 4 digit numeric code too.

As above, accessibility options in settings includes high contrast, bigger text etc. You can get the phone to auto-lock too.
