Morning.

Back in June I received an email from Experian to inform me that they found my email address being sold online.

I changed my emails password but ever since I’m getting daily emails from Microsoft account team with one time use codes.

I’ve just logged on to my account login attempts and I’m getting “ unsuccessful logins” from around the world, when I click each attempt it says “incorrect password entered” which is why I
Guess I’m receiving the one time use codes.

Is this to and extent normal for most people, or am I best off making a new email account, as much of a ball ache that would be

Is this your own domain or one of the main email providers like @live.co.uk?

Make sure you have enabled 2 factor authentication, if you haven't already.

Whilst it's a pain, the fact that you're getting these notifications means that you're still OK. Whilst it's annoying, it's no more than that.

It's likely that (assuming they don't manage to get in) these will stop in the next few days as they will move onto the next block of addresses to attack. I'd just wait it out.

Thanks for the replies.

The account is an hotmail account, I’ve just enabled the 2FA, should have done that already!

You're not the only one having issues.

Or is this itself a marketing ruse to frighten users into signing up for 1Password? It said my email address had been pwned in 9 breaches. The only ones specifically named were sites that I have definitely never used in my life.

I had this with StockX getting hacked, my email address was floating about somewhere. I made sure I changed my passwords, set up two factor and set up a second email address for recovery.

I still use a Hotmail account. In fact, I've had it that long, it still has my old surname I used at secondary school (02-07). It's the only email I've ever had.

Your reply reminded me that someone commented on it the other day, about it being Hotmail. A friend in his late teens/early 20s. I can't wait to tell him about dial up internet...

You should have stopped getting the codes now 2FA in enabled.

It's not. It's a useful resource that collates all data breaches. It's run by a Microsoft employee. He might get a referral fee from 1Password that helps with the running costs

What sites? Are you sure they're not the name of the breach rather than a specific site? For example Cit0day is the name of a breach that accessed 23,000 websites.

No it's a site run by someone very respected in the industry. I've been in a room on a course he runs. You can trust it.

Same here. Not sure why I 'need' to change. Maybe because someone on the Internet said 'Wow!'.

It must be a function of time and usage but eventually every email address will be collected and sold online.

I suspect anyone old enough to have a hotmail account has been through this. I have, and it went back to normal after a few days of alerts.

I've had my hotmail address since before the days you could login to someone else's account with the "eh" password laugh

The only actual issue I've ever had with it was when MSFT wanted my firstname@hotmail address and made me swap to something else. Grass, fields, etc.

Don't go back quite that far but we (me, wife and daughters) all had InitialSurname@hotmail.com . Not a very common surname, but not that usual.

Wife lost hers as she didn't use it for a while and someone else got it, daughters are married now so stopped using theirs too. And I use Gmail for personal stuff now, although I've kept my Hotmail address active.
