Hi

Looking for advice regarding my phone. It's an old iphone 5 a friend gave me, original battery.

It's fine for phonecalls etc but the battery runs out very quick when recording videos and taking pics. It can be dead within 10-15 of continuously recording / taking pics. I can go for walks up to about 2-2.5hrs, so would like something to be able to handle these type of timescales.

It doesn't have to be able to record for that long continuously, only a few minutes and with maybe 20-30 photo's.

Am I better off starting afresh with a new phone altogether, I currently pay sim only basic pay per month deal which is about £6.50 a month.

I don't stream or view on my phone, I do all social media etc on my PC at home, so what options do I have.

How much could / would I have to pay per month if I wanted to go monthly contract? Or would a newer 2nd hand phone and another or updated sim only deal be better?

And finally, any suggestions for the actual phone would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help.

OSF

iPhone 5 battery is 1440mah.

If I were you I’d just buy an iPhone 11 or similar off eBay. Make sure battery is min 85%. Anything under 80% is not good.

A few months back I finally binned my iPhone SE (battery was useless) and bought an iPhone 11 Pro
Max for £350. Continued with my sim only contract. I will do the same in a few years time.

In the meantime, buy one of these

iFixIt do a replacement battery kit for £24 or something

iPhone 5 battery is pretty easy to change, but it is an absolutely ancient phone.

I had a battery and screen replaced on an iPhone 8 at the Apple Store recently. (£240).

They broke the haptics part so I had to revisit the store.

Three and a half hours waiting they tell me the vibrate is not working now and I will need a complete Service part/replacement phone. I don’t want that as some parts will be reconditioned parts.

There is no email address to complain to.
Webchat sends you to a feedback page which has limited characters and they don’t respond.

There is no clear Head Office address either.

Customer service has been a nightmare so far.

Just buy the latest iPhone that comes out in a few weeks, pointless trying to keep that 5 healthy and working. Get it on Apple finance 0%, then get a sim only deal. This should last you 5/6 years.

I know some people don't need the latest iPhone etc. but just upgrading every half a decade or so is more than enough for those users, and it'll allow them to access the latest updates that Apple provide.

I had to retire my beloved 5S this year as Apple stopped supporting them.

Many features and apps became unavailable so it had to go.

Last year I had the battery and screen replaced at a small phone shop, took an hour, cost £23!

Wish I had just bought a newer phone a the time now.

Loved my 5S as it was tiny and didn't fall out of my top pocket like the SE that replaced it.

Paid £130 for the immaculate used SE off a local guy.

You can also check out my favourite place for Apple kit:

https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/refurbished/iphone

Apple's own refurbished outlet. All phones have new battery and outer case, and cost less than they do new. You need to check stock regularly, as it changes all the time. If you're not obsessing over having the latest model, this is the place to go to.

But don't buy a 12 mini, 'cause they've got tiny batteries and you'll have the same problem again in a couple of years!

Apologies to all those who replied, I forgot to say thanks, the replies were really helpful. Having a bit of a rough time at the mo and forgot to say thanks.

My power / charging cable has started to play up, it's very temperamental, even with cable and phone on flat surface. I've tried gently cleaning the connection and it helped a bit but charging is still quite hit and miss.

I was looking at replacement cables (Usb to usb-c) but got a bit confused by all the choice - are they all the same, can someone advise what be suitable for iPhone5.

As always, many thanks for all the info, it's very helpful.

I'd buy a newer iPhone from the Apple refurb store, something that will have support for a few years and keep your sim only deal.

Thank you for the reply.

This is probably contender for dumbest question of the year, but how do you buy from the Apple site? Do I need to log in with my Apple ID?

Contender no 2:

The storage quoted on the example quoted earlier in the thread, link below, varies between 64 / 126 etc. Is this how much the phone itself can store or a combination of what phone and iCloud can store?

https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/buy-iphone/iphone-se...

As it's so close to Black Friday, would it be worth waiting for that, or does that not make any / enough difference?

You could wait for Black Friday if you can but Apple themselves don't seem to offer much these days.

John Lewis are currently giving a free Apple case with the iPhone SE - you also get 2 years warranty.

Thank you for the reply.

Is this 'transferred' to the icloud so the icloud stores the same, or a combined total from both?

Thank you - I owe you another thanks for the recommendation for BRAVE as browser to bypass new Youtube regs (on other thread).

Much appreciated.

I'm on my 3rd iPhone 5 battery. I think it cost about £12 including tools. That was 18 months ago, still lasts 10 days or so on idle. Capacity seems to be pretty much what the original battery was. Oh, and I replaced the charge/data socket when I did the battery. I appreciate not everyone has the dexterity etc. Try your local independent shop, next to the nail bar and discount alcohol shop. (No idea where you are, they all seem to be in places like that). Compared to Apple prices they will be peanuts, and no less effective. On machines like that, it isn't rocket science.
