My wife has a iPhone SE and WhatsApp does not show notifications - when you open the app it then 'downloads' the messages.

For example when I send her a message I see 1 tick to show me it has gone. She gets nothing on her phone, no notification, no red dot on WhatsApp, we then open WhatsApp on her phone and the message appears and I get to see the second tick then once she opens it I get the blue ticks.

I have done soft and hard resets on the phone - it did come back for a while, but after two resets today its still the same.

I have checked all notification settings in both WhatsApp and the phone settings. I have turned them all off and back on again.

Next step I guess is to delete the app and re install - but will that loose all her messages.

Any suggestions????
Thanks

Your description seems to suggest that it's not an issue with notifications - because when you send, you can see it's not delivered until she opens the app.

I don't know much about iPhones - Android can kill apps to "optimise" battery useage - could IOS be doing something similar and aggressively killing Whatsapp for some reason?

Is the mute notifications selected by mistake?

Notifications are not muted (I think) everything else shows and displays notifications (eg emails and messenger) it just seems to be WhatsApp.

No idea about the battery being involved - I did check to see if there was a big drain in the battery health section but seemed to me normal.

I am just stuck where to look now.

Just did a quick search.

If you go to Settings -> Whatsapp - do you have "Background App Refresh" enabled? It might be called slightly differently in that model.

My grandmother just had the exact same issue and this resolved it for her.

Are you on wifi? There are some mobile data options that limit background activity too, have a look at those.

I’ve got the iPhone XS and think it was about 6months ish ago it began this after an update. I don’t get notifications, or I might do an hour or 2 after. I open WhatsApp sometimes to a load of messages. Very rare I actually get a notification. I’ve compared settings to other iPhones, reset, etc etc and nothing seems to resolve it. I’ve given up now and just accept it and check now and again.
Got no issues with anything else just WhatsApp.

Got it working for about an hour this evening - basically I turned each setting off then on again and it started to work. Now stopped again.

Yes on Wifi at home
