Evening,

Bit of a puzzling one.

I’ve recently had a few non starters with changing broadband providers, as things stand I’m on the same broadband network I’ve had for many years.

I came home last weekend and my sky q mini box wasn’t working, and Amazon Alexa was flashing yellow. Neither of these things bothered me as I have had sky conk out before and Alexa often flashes yellow.

Main sky q is working ok, as are other devices connected to WiFi.

Despite repeated, and frustrating, attempts I’m still without either.

Today having had a closer look I think I’ve narrowed the problem to my ubiquiti point, which is flashing blue, suggesting no connection. This access point has provided hard wired connection to the q mini box.

It’s one of these:

https://linitx.com/product/ubiquiti-unifi-ac-in-wa...

If I’m honest I didn’t really understand why the TV chap installed it, he claimed it would be life changing and, truth be told, I’ve never noticed any difference.

So, my only theory is that this ubiquiti thing provides a new broadband network that Alexa has connected to when I set her up and this is the reason why both have stopped working.

Any ideas? Go easy I’m not an expert…

Fixed Alexa issue.. it appears to be the ubiquiti causing the problem

The Ubiquiti is simply a wifi access point.

If it isn't connected back to your internet router properly, then it won't get an internet connection (assuming the Sky and Amazon devices are connected to the Ubiquiti AP.

What prompted your TV guy to install it? What issues was it expected to resolve? When did the issues start to happen? (After TV install? After broadband provider change? Sometime else?).

Thanks for your reply.

In terms of chronology:

November 2020 upgrade from sky to sky q.
Mini box fitted in kitchen
TV installer suggested the ubiquiti as kitchen is a fair distance from router, suggested it would provide far superior performance in the kitchen, my partner works from home so we went along with it.
About a month ago I had a failed upgrade from EE on my broadband, this was stopped as the installer wanted to install box in the wrong place and we bickered about him drilling multiple holes in my wall. Long story short BT reinstated my original WiFi.
Came home about a week and a half ago to sky a mini not working, together with amazon echo.
Now fixed echo, restarted and connected to WiFi.
Sky Q mini cannot establish connection with internet either via wired ir wireless.
Ubiquiti point is showing a continuous blue light, but is not connected to router.
Connection via switch box in loft running multiple points around the house, none of which I’ve checked yet.
Switch box in loft seems fairly temperamental, I’ve swapped it out twice over the years as I seem unable to get a stable setup.

Hopefully enough information.

Fixed. 4 ports in back of router and one isn’t working.

I must’ve switched them when I reinstated the router and the cable feeding the switch box in the loft was not live

If I were you I'd replace your router. If one switch port is buggered, the rest of it might not be great (could this be the source of your instability? What brand is it?).

As a minimum, tape over the dead port so you know not to use it.

If he has a smart hub 2 it may be configured for fttp or fttc which used port 4 as the link to the fibre modem, it’s easily changed in the settings.
