Hi all,

Last week I went to turn on an old laptop and was greeted with windows update.

The update froze on around 98% and did not complete.

Ever since when trying to boot I get a page fault in nonpaged area BSOD, can’t get into windows at all.

I’ve tried creating a usb recovery drive using the tool on the Microsoft website, but can’t get the computer to boot from that either (have changed boot order in BIOS and tried the boot menu also).

Did get it to open the recovery tool once, but the installation failed.

Any ideas other than throwing it out the nearest window?

Thanks

I'd kill it with a hammer and dispose of the battery on a bonfire.

Is there data you want on the hard drive? Then pop it into a desktop computer (not as system drive) or a USB caddy of the right flavour and access that way.

Do you want the laptop operational once more? Replace the drive with an SSD and new install. It'll be faster as a bonus.

All sorted chaps, thanks.

Changed from UEFI to Legacy in the BIOS and after that it seemed happy enough to boot off the recovery drive and allowed me to reinstall windows.

Laptop was set up originally with an SSD drive for the Windows install and a second normal HDD for storage so happily I haven't lost too much.
