Had fibre installed over a week ago and connection been getting worse since, to the point we've not had any connection for 2 days now

Engineer out this morning and replaced some bits on the fibre socket but still no connection

Noticed argos/amazon sell them

Could I buy a router and just plug in and it would work?

Do we have to stick to a Vodafone router?

Personally I would persevere at this early stage, & rather than spend your own money wait for Vodaphone to sort out the issue. It doesn't sound like a router issue as the router you currently have is brand new anyway I imagine.

Did the engineer not swap out the router to rule that out?

No router is probably over 3 yes old

Engineer did everything he could but didn't replace router

I wasn't in when fibre installed, should we have got a new router at that point?

No consolation but we switched to Vodafone a few weeks ago and it’s been absolutely crappy.

It can only be their hardware as the connection is Openreach most likely.

Our BT router was faultless for years.

You can use any VDSL/VDSL2 router. You'll need your vodafone user name and password from your existing router - you'll have to ask support for your password as they are hidden I believe.

They will look like this

user name: dsl000xxxxxx@broadband.vodafone.co.uk
password: 3nUITZPl

No probs here with Voda for years - btw - you can ask support for a fixed IP and you get one for free, which is unusual for a home ISP

Just to check but have you unplugged the old phone line from the router and configured it to use the Fibre line?

Fibre generally works or doesn't and if there is no connection then odds on changing router won't help.

Old phone socket in hallway is now redundant

New line now coming in from telegraph pole and through outside wall into my office with an open reach white box

Router now plugs into new socket and WAN socket on router. Telephone now plugs into router

He's talking about fibre to the premesis - which most home owners do not have. We get an openreach RJ11/45 dual socket.

With fibre it is not as susceptible to interference so if the broadband is connected then it is unlikely the router at fault.

Have you done a reset on the router back to factory settings and then re-configured it?

If you’ve just had FTTP installed, why is your router 3 years old? Why didn’t Vodafone give you a new one?

FWIW we have FTTP through Vodafone with a router that looks just like your photo and it has been 100% reliable since we contracted with them a couple of years ago.

We had BT before simply because Openreach put the fibre backbone in round here and BT did some door to door selling when it all went live. We moved to Vodafone (lower price for a faster speed) and the service just worked, because all the fibre infrastructure is new.

If it was me I’d be on at Vodafone to come and get it up and running. You could ask them for a new modem, as I suppose it’s just possible that yours has a fault as it isn’t new. But give them a chance to get it working. If you fiddle about with new random bits of kit, it just gives them the opportunity to wash their hands of responsibility.

Agreed with Riff. You’re paying for a connection you aren’t receiving. Vodafone need to fix it and you want to keep their hardware until they do. Once it’s up and running you can look at upgrades if you need them.

Another thing just occurred to me. Our Vodafone router came with a dongle to connect to the 4G network in the event that the main fibre link goes down. Does your contract include a backup 4G network connection? If it does, did you get a dongle and does that work?

No dangle received

They have said this morning they are sending a replacement router due to land tomorrow

If that doesn't work I think Mrs P's head will explode

Does the ONT (box connected to the fibre itself) show healthy lights

This should show a power and a PON light illuminated ?

The router needs to be setup to work with it correctly

Is the patch cable from the Openreach socket plugged into the right socket on the router ? On mine it goes into the one marked WAN (and not the one marked Internet). I can't remember where I got the instruction to do that - it must have been in a mail from Vodafone. I'll see if I can dig it out.
