Firstly I don't have a apple phone..

Is the airtag 'just as good' and any precautions or limitations to be aware of?

Wish there was but nothing I'm aware of

Tile is limited to users that also have it and stories of batteries which are non replaceable going dead within a year

The new Samsung tags have replaceable batteries.
I bought a pack of 4 for something like £25 in the recent Prime day sale. I have yet to use them though so cannot comment on how well they work.

Have used the samsung tags to track suitcases, my bike and the kids.

It's most useful for kids when on trips and even the bike and it's likely they will be nearby someone's phone that'll detect the tag and give you it's location.

Suitcases are OK, but there are many times when the cases are sitting on the plane/in a crate well away from you or another person's phone, so location updates can be sporadic.

The only benefit of apple tags might be that more people have apple specific devices compared to apple. The Google tags might be better when they come out, but I can't say the samsung ones are bad.

I'd give tile a try - I've been using it for years and curently tracking about 20 of them, most of the fmaily have them and they have definately paid for themselves several times over...

There's smart tag and smart tag plus. The plus version is twice as expensive but more precise.

Id argue AirTags are far superior to any other trackers on the market that don't have their own built in gps etc. due to how they secure location based on any of the 1.65+bn apple devices that are out there.

They don't rely on having particular apps etc installed for their locations to be identified and accurate unlike say Tile or the Samsung SmartTag that's limited to Samsung phones with the SmartTag app built in.

Whilst that is true apparently also the case for Android these days, their flaw is that they rely on the person who is using the Airtag having one specific brand of phone... A brand of phone that the OP specifically said he didn't have. An Airtag serves no useful purpose if Apple know where it is but refuse to tell you biglaugh

ETA Apparently over a billion Android devices are on the Google "Find my device" network now... So... Erm...

OP, Chipolo may be the way to go. Might get some myself, but haven't used it so can't confirm performance.
