Dual monitors on laptop with one video output
Discussion
I've just taken possession of a new Asus X515J, it's got a HDMI port and a USB C port, but the USB C port does not do video out.
Is there any way, using a fancy cable or add-on, to get this laptop to work with two monitors that I can use in an extended display configuration (rather than duplicates of each other)?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you're certain that the USB C port doesn't support DP-Alt (as that's what most of the USB C hub/display extenders rely upon), then your other option is to use the USB 3 port and something like this:

I used a cheapy £30 USB A to HDMI adapter on a laptop that was a few years old. I never tried gaming but it was fine for office type use, web browsing, even YouTube. Windows just saw it as another monitor on the output preferences, so I could extend the desktop and didn't need to install any third party stuff.
J5create is the brand on mine, but I suspect there are many coming out of the same factory with the same hardware and price.

I'd question the value to be honest.
I used to try and drive two monitors off a lightweight Lenovo that did have two USB-C ports that supported video, but even so if I tried to present in a Teams call, the whole thing would collapse into a stuttering mess!
After 6 months blaming my poor, innocent broadband, I figured out that the laptop just couldn't cope with trying to run everything across three screens. Work got me a much chunkier mobile workstation which has as much memory on its GPU as the previous laptop had in total, and I've never looked back!
