Updating from Windows 7 is the best security improvement you'll make there smile

Grab Windows 10 / 11? And you can make use of Windows Defender - Included and adequate.

Agreed, for most users Windows Defender is plenty good enough.

Windows defender that is built into W10 and w11, you don’t need anything else.

Why don't you just stay with Kaspersky?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kaspersky-Internet-Securi...

£6 a year by annual subscription or £8 for one year.

Another vote for Kaspersky, I use it on all my PCs. I just get a new 3x computer key from eBay every year .. usually between 10-15 quid.

I find it's very unobtrusive/light on resources and has a reasonable set of useful features.

Can you buy another machine and relegate the one with 7 on to whatever you need it for without giving it network access? AV on an unpatched OS is like aspirin for an STD, not resolving the underlying issue.

As the Windows 7 ESU programme which I assume you've subscribed to is ending, it's probably time to get a new vendor for whichever software or hardware that's chained you to Windows 7.

ESET is my preferred AV for home and business. Kasperski has been flushed out of our industry over security concerns as it's Russian.

Yes, there is absolutely no danger in using Russian cyber security software, and the fact that no first world government cyber agency allows its use is entirely coincidental.

Correct. Home office does not allow it at all.

From the NCSC website:

Individuals using Kaspersky AV

We've had enquiries from people worried about their home IT. It almost certainly remains the case that nearly all individuals in the UK (and many enterprises) are not going to be targeted by Russian cyber attack, regardless of whether they use Russian products and services.

If your personal laptop uses Kaspersky AV (or other products):

it's highly unlikely to be directly targeted
it’s safe to turn on and use at the moment

However, you may need to move to a new AV product if Kaspersky itself becomes subject to sanctions, since the AV product would likely stop getting updates (and AV software is only effective if it's updated regularly).

Might want to read the rest of where that snippet came from...

Whilst the Russian State isn't interested in the pictures shazza posted of her breakfast on Facebook, that doesn't mean it's safe to use Russian software.
