Hi All,

I'm looking for a portable WIFI device that I can take on holiday, so that the family can check emails etc and catch up on this forum.

I was thinking of something like this :

https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-M7200-Portable-Un...

I don't want to buy a SIM card where I get tied into some kind of 'rolling' contract - I'd much rather buy a PAYG Sim card with a large data allowance that will last over the holiday.

I want something that is very easy to use - is there a device into which I can just fit a SIM card and it will work ?

If going EU, Before buying anything, anyone in your group have a roaming data allowance that allows tethering, use the phone as a hot spot.

One of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Huawei-Low-Cost-Super-Fas...
will do exactly that. I have had one for 6 years and it is great.

Thank you for a prompt reply - we'll be staying in the UK

What SIM Card would be best ?

I don't want to get tied into a contract - it's pretty much going to be 'one-off' use.

Wont you have data enabled devices anyway? Or at least one you can tether to?

Do you have an old phone in a drawer somewhere? Buy a sim, stick it in that, then use it as a hot spot.

Take a look at Popit mobile - no contract. But you do need to cancel the subscription.

Get a lebara from hotukdeals on a £2.99pm or £0.99 for 3 / 6months introductory offer. They offer anything up to 30GB, and it's 30 day rolling contract so you can just buy it for 30 days.

Why bother at all? If you're staying in the uk, surely the family members have some kind of data plan on their phones?

If not, my options would be:

1. Get them data
2. Tether yours (work can't monitor what the data is used for if that's a concern)
3. Most places have free wifi in the UK (hotels, shopping centres, bars, restaurants - Mcdonalds etc).

To me, it seems you're using a sledgehammer to crack a nut for a weeks holiday.

This is what I do, I have a pay as you go O2 sim that I only top up when going away.

I used to have a mifi device years ago, but an old phone works well.
