I like to know what's happening with updates to my devices so neither my phone nor tablet auto-update - they're both Android.

It seems that some apps update several times a week and often there are 20-30 updating at the same time.

My (stupid) question is: why do they need to do this so frequently?

All sorts of reasons. Most commonly:

1. Bug Fixes
2. Security Updates
3. Marketing and advertising updates

I had a slew of apps update at the beginning of June (Android 13). The only discernable difference appears to be the appearance of Rainbow Icons for pride month.

That's what I suspected. I'm intrigued that Android updates are so frequent when it doesn't happen to the Windows version on my laptop as often.

Serious question… how do you decide whether to update or not? Which apps did you choose not to update?

I update all of them. It's not a question of whether to update or not rather why is it needed so often compared with the same software on Windows devices.

For most people you really want to just leave apps to auto update and be done with it.

I'm not 'most people' - everyone says so...

Can’t for the life of me fathom why anyone would turn off auto-updates for apps. It makes zero sense to do so.

Occasionally there'll be bugs in an update which stop the app working properly.Let others try it first

I would agree. But my mum still doesn’t use direct debits as she doesn’t trust “them” to empty her bank account.

OP- just let them auto update.

Yep, for me it's this kind of thing. For my important apps I like to leave it a couple of days and check the reviews to see if there are any major issues. 95% of them I will just ok the update as soon as the notification appears.

I have also had it where the developer has done a major update and really messed around with the interface or deleted functionality so I'd prefer to avoid that too.

Current version of Spotify doesn't work nicely with my car - won't display the correct song details on the dash. I found the last version of Spotify that works from a couple of years ago and so now don't want to update it. The price I have to pay for this is to manually check, usually most days, and update every other app one at a time.
