Router recommendations, CityFibre connection

We have a CityFibre-provided connection with Zen as our ISP. I understood that they usually supply a Fritz!Box router but for whatever reason we ended up with some Technicolor thing which isn't the best and requires rebooting once a week or so. As my wife and I both work from home now I'd like to get something a bit more sturdy.

I'm told by Zen that we can use any router which allows us to set the VLAN ID on the WAN connection. It'll need to have 1GbE LAN ports and I guess at least a 1GbE WAN port. Any suggestions?

This might not be much help, because they gave me a FRITZ!Box 7530, but other routers they have provided (so I assume will be compatible with what you're asking) have been Technicolor TG582N, Technicolor TG589, Technicolor DWA0120, Technicolor DGA122, Zyxel VMG1312, Zyxel VMG8924, FRITZ!Box 3490 and FRITZ!Box 7530.

Does it need to offer a WiFi access point and/network switch too? If so this would be up to the job:

I have the ubiquiti dream machine pro connected to 1gb fibre and it's been rock solid. Recommended if you also want POE ports, cctv, and wifi access points.

Thanks. Sorry, should have said - I have a mesh Wifi setup so no need for the router to have Wifi and I have 1GbE switches which all link to a 12-port switch, that then connects to the router. So the key things for the new router are:

• VLAN support for PPPoE connection
• Min 1GbE WAN port
• Min 1x 1GbE LAN ports
• No requirement for WiFi

Hadn't considered Ubiquiti, I'll go have a look at them now.

The USG you've linked to is an old device in the Unifi line-up. It will route traffic at near 1Gbps wire speed (I believe - never tried it) but the moment you turn on traffic inspection it will be severely restricted in throughput terms.

I used mine with DSL but replaced it with a UDM Pro SE when I had a gig service installed.

The unifi stuff will support VLAN tagging on the WAN. It's also a well featured and nice-to-manage ecosystem generally should you want to replace your switches and AP's in the future with something centrally manageable.

I use a Ubiquiti ER-X to replace a fibre router. Does PPPoE etc.

It's the baby version of their bigger Edge routers- if you have full gigabit fibre you might want a bigger bit of kit.

The Dream Router should do the job. Just disable the WiFi.

I’ve got a USG. It will route close to 1Gbit but 85Mbit is the cap if doing any sort of IPS/IDS. You can do basic port blocking/allowing etc without significantly slowing it down. Keep in mind it would also need a controller. The newer UniFi dream router is more all in one but still can’t do a full gig with all the features turned on. It is also quite noisy so despite looking like a consumer router rather than a rack mounted thing it isn’t good for a quiet space.

Considered pfsense?

I'd be looking at an Omada Router, my ER-7206 has been solid.

Not sure on the PPPOE on a VLAN, a quick google suggests it can but you might want to double check.

I binned my Ubiquiti kit in favour of the Omada setup and glad I did.
