We had a relative design some web pages for us almost 3 years ago for our holiday cottage after we were abruptly left in the lurch by a local company we used.

He chose to use Wix, and I broadly keep it running: nothing too fancy, link to a gmail calendar and some documents. It has worked okay for the past couple of years.
We are also on TripAdvisor, but have zero bookings from them this year, so happy to let that lapse….

For various reasons, we *may* pause the letting next year….& Wix would want over £300 to renew their hosting in October eek

I’m wondering whether there is a way to cheaply keep the domain we have, but potentially pause or even cancel the web hosting with them. Probably need to ask them on this too, they may have something available to lower the cost….

Anyone have suggestions on the cheapest way to host a page, or a few pages?
Also whether there is any “simple” way to move our Wix pages to another platform. Wordpress could be one option, but I am not a web design dude, so any thoughts welcomed!

If you're just holding onto it, You can transfer the domain to any registrar.

I'd suggest OVH, They have a free rudimentary webserver with all domains, so you could pop up a quick holding page for the time being

yes, you can transfer your domain to any other registrar you find...
there are 1000s of registrars, but some of the big names are GoDaddy / 123-Reg / etc. (most of whom are probably owned by GoDaddy!)

on wix there are guides:
.co.uk domain: https://support.wix.com/en/article/transferring-a-...
.com etc. domain https://support.wix.com/en/article/transferring-yo...

you won't be able to transfer your wix pages as such because they are proprietary code for wix, but transferring the domain is fine...
costs will vary - from £10ish p/a for the domain and a bit more for hosting up to business level hosting which can range from £10-£15 p/m upwards but gives far more bespoke options... As an example we charge £216 p/a plus VAT for domain and hosting - but you get humans who manage it for you for that money!

If you are not all that fussed about the web page then parking just the domain with someone like 123-reg will do the job for you very cheaply.
If you want web page(s) as well then cost will vary depending on what you want - at a simple level the same company will give you hosting and you can install wordpress - but you are then on you own in terms of work on it (quite doable but not always as simple as some will claim) - the alternative of getting someone to build a site for you will cost quite a lot more - but if you need more complexity / booking systems / etc. then it might be the only way...

Thanks for those replies.
Good to see we can park the domain if we want.

Maybe £330 for 3 years is a reasonable plan, if we decide to keep letting the property.....which is still a possibility.

cheers

Ahh you didn't mention that it was for three years...
Yes, that is not unreasonable - about £10 p/m
Wix as the right solution is of course another discussion - but if it works okay for you stick with it - pragmatism is often the best approach rather than a lot of hassle and cost to get the 'perfect' solution which then doesn't bring you much more than the original!

With Wix, you're paying for the platform and not just the hosting. You won't be able to easily move your Wix site to another provider. Their cheapest plan is something like £5/month so you could investigate changing that.

Knowing (what little) I do now about maintaining the site, I would definitely not recommend Wix to others....but as you say, it is there now...

That might be something we can investigate. We really only use it to advertise and link a calendar to, as well as having a few pages of Ts & Cs, guidebook, gallery, etc.... no funky payment integration.

cheers!

You can keep the domain running anywhere and a .co.uk is free to transfer.

Re WIX, you can't export this site to use elsewhere as they're a separate service but you can take out cheaper hosting at approx. 5 a month and slowly build a new site on a platform such as WordPress. Even with no site, you can have a hosting package and use this for email.

I see you're local to me going by IOW? If you want some local hosting based in Hants, check out https://blinkweb.co.uk/web-hosting/ and use code PISTON for 50% off too.

Our cottage is indeed IOW (Shorwell): I’ll take a look at that link. I can imagine inertia seeing me take little action….the website we have does look good, even if Wix is a bit of a ballache.
Main challenge for 2024 will be finding a new cleaner eek
