Not sure if that is the right description

Am trawling through old newspapers archives looking for a a marriage between John Smith and Ann Jones. In the search input box i put John Smith Ann Jones but get results for every article that has any of the names. Is there a facility that will enable me to narrow it down to the two names?
Sort of putting brackets around each name ( John Smith) or something similar
TIA

You're searching for a needle in a haystack. The search logic will depend on how it has been implemented and how the documents have been indexed, Google has quite a few tricks but it is a money making search engine.

Maybe email the site owners to see if there is a more efficient manner.

Double quotes should do what you need.

John Smith will search for any occurrence matching either John or Smith
“John Smith” will find only occurrences matching John Smith in that order
“John” “Smith” will find articles where both John and Smith occur, but not necessarily in that order.

If you wanted to find an article mentioning John Smith, Imelda Marcos, turnips and clutch pressure plates (good luck!) then your search term might be:

“clutch” “pressure plate” “imelda marcos” “turnip” “John smith”

Note that the order of the words in the quotes matters, but the order of the search strings doesn’t.
