That's a pretty old phone now running Android 9 at best. App permissions have changed hugely since then so current versions are unlikely to work.

Uninstall it and download and install a version from 2019 ish from APK Mirror (you might need to allow apps to install from 3rd party sources in settings)

ps. take care what he does on the phone as it won't have received security updates for a few years now.

Google killed off Play a few years ago when it moved to YouTube Music instead. Shame, as for my needs Play was much better.

Some screenshots would help here.

You say you've tried updating it but you say also say it's no longer available (I know it's replaced with YT Music) so I'm a bit unclear on what exactly you've done.

You should be able to update it to the last version of Play Music and then at least hide it, and usually you should also be able to uninstall it, but it might have been baked into the phone to be fair.

Rather annoyingly, Google didn't offer an easy uninstal option when it decided to kill off Play Music.

OP, I guess that you've already tried going into Settings - Apps & Notifications - See All Apps to disable Play Music there? Your menu names might be slightly different.
