Recommend a reliable external hard drive

Don't worry about the backup software coming with the drive. There's plenty of free alternatives. If it's windows I've always got on very well with Veeam. https://www.veeam.com/virtual-machine-backup-solut...
As for the drive itself, if you have a modern SSD or nvme drive actually in the laptop then I'd be looking for an equivalent external for speed purposes - the backup speed will be determined by the weakest link in the chain so either then internal, external drive or the connectivity between. If you've got spinning rust in the machine then you're unlikely to get any benefits from the extra speed afforded by an external SSD for example. Likewise if you only have USB2 ports then again an external USB3 standard nvme drive in an enclosure is not going to worth the premium as it'll be bottlenecked.
Any of the big name manufacturers should be fine reliability wise I would have thought.
