Hi Guys, while my son's pc was at the mender he borrowed my Acer laptop. And dropped it! Result is about 40% of the screen is mostly white with a hint of black.
It's about 3 years old battery down from 11 hours to about 4, but SSD, 8G ram I think and plenty storage.
Can the screen be replaced by a local guy or do I bite the bullet and replace. It was around £550, when bought from Laptopsdirect IIRC. Usage mostly photos, banking, purchases, email and Pistonheads.
Thanks

A screen will be about £50 + fitting

if it does what you need. save the money

if its struggling, replace it

Depends how handy you are.
I must've replaced a dozen screens for the brood of kidults over the years.
Parts available on eBay.
Plenty of vids on youtube to show the methods required for various makes and models.
Certainly cheaper than a repair shop, and satisfying to hand back a working device.
You could change the battery out too.

Apparently I can get a replacement although there's a multitude of options for around £55 delivered. I'll also need a heat gun? Worth a try or get a professional to do it? Do I feel lucky?

I replaced my laptop screen myself a few weeks ago. Ordered a (new) replacement on ebay, cost £40, fitting was easy. Just watch youtube on how to do it for your model.

Or if you don't need portability, use your laptop as a desktop.
Add external monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Thanks everyone, confidence sufficient to give it a go.
What's the worst that can happen?
Away for a few days, using android phone for everything, will report back when done.

To bring the thread to a close, purchased new screen from Accupart £41 and bravely went in. Took about half an hour, mostly trying to dislodge a string of silicone like glue.
All working fine again although it may be not quite as clear as the original.
Thanks for all the help and guidance.
