I've given up with my HP multifunction pile of crap which keeps letting me down.

Can anyone recommend a printer/scanner that is:

(a) not HP
(b) able to connect via a usb lead to my pc (have enough of trying to resolve wifi printer hassles.
(c) simple to set up, and reliable.

I've had an Epson XP-322 for six or so years now & it still works fine.

It whinges about non-Epson cartridges, but they work just fine. I don't think I'm allowed to name here but will pass on their details if you contact me direct (I hope that's allowed!)
Pre-covid I had to do a clean up with a kit from the non-Epson cart suppliers & it's been fine ever since.

It's normally connected via WiFi.
I've got 2 "scan" programs on the PC, one needs a USB connection, the other is OK wireless.

As long as there's no signs on the horizon about Epson locking out non-Epson carts, I'd happily buy whatever has replaced it in the model line again.
It does need to be used every 10 days or so to keep the nozzles unblicked.

We have had a Brother black and white Laser printer/scanner for 5 years now.
Excellent, would buy another.

There's a little shop in town which does colour A3 laser printing for a fair price, but these days the amount of printing we really want is quite small.

My current Epsom XP-6105 can connect via Wifi and USB and is pretty good I think. The software it comes with usable and hasn't given me any problems so far.

Has anyone ever managed to buy an inkjet printer that hasn't had the colour cartridge block after not using if for a couple of months meaning you effectively have to buy a new one?

We have one of these, I bought it after my girlfriend was trying to scan every page of her passport with her phone for her visa. I used to get charged £3.50 to print a couple of pages at Snappy Snaps, so this printer has more than paid for itself. As I said, the colour is partially blocked and the black cartridge is starting to run out.

But for £31.49 I can buy a whole new printer, a black cartridge on it's own is £20. I admit it is absolutely wasteful to throw the printer away and just buy a new one, but it seems a no brainer to me.

With my old Canon, I could remove the printhead and clean it using warm water to unblock the nozzles. have a search for you particular model. Success rates do vary so no gaurantees.

The stupid thing is it is cheaper for me to buy a new printer than to replace the ink cartridges. Tempted to just buy another one rather than mess about, plus I accidentally bought a black shiny one that looks like crap compared to the white one.

That printer is stupidly cheap. We should grind up our old printers and throw it into the sea just to make a point.

Have you check the price of compatibles? I don't usually go for the genuine inks as they're so expensive so if compatibles work for you. It may cost effective to try and resurrect it.

Laser? Inkjet? Budget? How many pages per month?

Was thinking inkjet but I'm beginning to think maybe lazer would be less hassle. Probably don't need a scanner now I think about it - can simply use camera on phone for docs I need to email.

Up to £100

Low usage - 30ppm ish. Just want something that isn't temperamental.

But the colour cartridge is partially clogged and doesn't print correctly. In my experience it is impossible to resurrect them and I don't know if the head is part of the cartridge or part of the printer.

For the sake of £31.49 I really don't want to even attempt to resurrect it when I can just have a brand new one instead. I know it is wrong, more e and plastic waste and part of me does feel guilty but I just cannot be assed messing around and spend money on an old printer only to have to buy a new one anyway.

Oh and the head cleaning function never, ever works.

As already expressed that is stupidly cheap, espcially as it is auto duplex.

Even a set of compatible/remanufactured cartridges, albeit XL ones, will cost more than the cost of the printer.

For the price, it'd be rude not to buy one wink

Hight recommend you take a look at the Brother Lasers, two in your budget.

Brother HL-1110 - is non duplex - just over £80
Brother HL-L2310D - auto duplex - just under £90

Both can use cheap compatible toners, the HL-1110 toners are cheaper than the HL-L2310D's

Is the scanner vital? can you take photos on your phone instead? I run 2 businesses and a phone does the job - but, i'm not you. You may be a lawyer working from home.

However, if you can ditch the multifunction part you get far more choices and a lot less money. I choose my printers based un usablility and how cheap I can get aftermarket toner. I spank my printer (I print colour manuals for the products I sell). I currenlty have a Brother HL-L8260CDW and it's superb.

You're right. I think that's the way to go.

A simple Brother mono laser connected via a usb lead is what I'm going to get.

If you're looking for a scan app for your phone, I can recommend CamScanner ... on Android at least ... been using it for years.

That is one of the big advantages of an HP printer to me, the print head is part of the cartridge so if they do somehow become clogged and manky you just replace the cartridge. The downside is the cartridges cost a bit more. My HP printer/scanner is at least 8 or 9 years old and still working fine (probably jinxed it now though), although I accept that doesn't mean new ones are as good.

The thing about cartridges costing as much as the printer is down to the cartridges supplied with the printer holding way less ink than the replacement ones, in order to keep the price of the printer down in the first place.

I have the HL-1110. It was bought right at the front of Covid (for about £55 from Argos) and used a lot for homeschool stuff but rarely gets used now - always ran it on compatible toner with zero issues.

For mobile phone scanning Ive used ScannerPro (iPhone, not sure if they do Android versions) for over 12yrs now and its great. It connects straight into GoogleDrive for all the saves - I've actually got it on 3 handsets all logging to the same space which is so handy.

Good choice, just use good quality paper, 80gsm+ and it should be pretty trouble free.
