Activate Windows (W10)

I've just acquired two old computers which seem to be in good running order but for whatever reason are displaying 'Activate Windows' (Windows 10) as a watermark on the lower right of the screen.

I haven't investigated the message any further but if I leave them un-activated, do they self-destruct in 5 days, does their functionality decrease with time, or will they continue to run without a problem?

I’ve had that watermark for 8 years so far.

Only problem I’ve noticed is that my desktop background can’t be changed.
