With apologies if this is often asked.

I’m about to move into a new place having lived out of a suitcase for the past few years. First on the ‘must buy’ list is a new tv. Only it’s been so long since I last bought one (very early Sony HD) I have no idea what I’m looking for.

I’ll only use it for casual gaming (Xbox one x), watching films (physical media and streamed) and Motorsport , I don’t watch tv in general. Last one was 70inch and I’d prefer something of a similar size. Audio not a consideration as I’d handle that via my hifi.

Just looking for what the sweet spot is in terms of tech and which brands are consistently decent.

No use talking price at this stage. I’m in Dubai which limits comparisons. If I have an idea of what I’m looking for I can then see whether I baulk at the prices locally!

Would have to be an LG C2/G2 OLED or Sony A80K for me.

Although my 2020 LG CX is not likely to be replaced for a while.

Mid range LG OLED is always a very safe bet.
My C8 is still excellent.

If you are in to colours being anywhere near right then as mentioned an LG OLED is good.

If you want a cheap TV that will do 90% of what the LG will do then Samsung or Sony for me.

I would always advocate buying a sound bar or system along side the TV as well as the sound from the thin TVs is rubbish.

The answer has always been last year's LG OLED or Sony's OLED

Yep seems so, the same ones in mmmfive’s post. Pretty much every web review I’ve read this evening agrees.

Thanks then, I’ll go see how big a screen I reckon I can get away with and what comparable prices are like.

Buy a streaming stick / box (roku, apple tv, google tv / chromecast) or similar and ditch whatever smart features are on the TV. I suppose if you are an iphone user for example, it will be easier with an Apple TV. Just so easy to flick content between ipad / phone and the tv etc. All apps bang upto date, supported properly, fully featured services etc. I found LG and Samsung TV smart features are lacking in comparison.

A decent soundbar will also boost the sound quality. I’m still often taken back by the dynamic range when watching a movie with a Sonos soundbar. TV speakers wouldn’t have the power to drive the sort of volumes required for a convincing explosion in a movie for example.

Prob two top bang for buck accessories to buy to improve the experience.
