Open iTunes for Windows.
In the menu bar, choose Edit > Preferences.
Click the General tab, then click Import Settings.
Click the menu next to Import Using, then choose the encoding format you want to convert the songs to.
Click OK.
Ok did that. Nothing happened. In the menu bar, choose Edit > Preferences.
Click the General tab, then click Import Settings.
Click the menu next to Import Using, then choose the encoding format you want to convert the songs to.
Click OK.
Has that not just changed my preferences if I import music from a CD or something?
What format are they in at the moment
Why do you want them in mp3 format
Why not just move / copy the files as they are now
It’s been a while since a messed around with iTunes but iirc the folder format is artist > album > tracks
Edit: this should point you in the direction of where your files are located.

They're in MPEG4 or m4A format which won't play on anything but iTunes. Why do you want them in mp3 format

That's for when you put a CD in and iTunes first imports that album into the Library. In the menu bar, choose Edit > Preferences.
Click the General tab, then click Import Settings.

Click OK.
dBpoweramp Music Converter will do what you need: https://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

I’d use this then, it will create copies but you’ll be in control of where they copy to which will make removing the m4a’s easier.I wouldn’t do this in your case as extracting the mp3 versions from the m4a will be a pita.

On the Mac you simply highlight the songs, go to [File]>[Convert]>[Create MP3 Version]...which puts an MP3 version of the file in the album folder.
