Bit of an odd one and any help welcome

We’re currently in the US and installed an esim in my Samsung phone today and bought 3GB of data which is utterly masses based on my usual use

Except it isn’t as at close of play today I’ve used 400MB of which 300 is Chrome. The other stuff is mostly Google maps which has been heavily used for navigation.

Looking at my history my chrome use is modest at best, a bit of wiki around local attractions, time spent on the public transport website, booking some things to do and looking at restaurants. My downloads folder has a couple of maps and a menu from the above with a total size of 8MB.

The 300MB is 90% foreground to background

I’ve probably looked at less than a dozen websites none of which played video or music and am surprised if they’re that data hungry. Is there an obvious explanation for something I’ve missed?

Cheers

Podcast updates? If your Podcast app is via Chrome?
Play Store? Does This fall under the Chrome umbrella?

Android has this weird thing where if you don't use an app it won't update it until you next open it. Or at least it does for me and I cannot work out how to make it update all apps.

If you've been opening apps to work out what it is maybe it's that?

Download the maps in Google Maps over wifi. Quick and easy. Results in minimal data usage when navigating.

As for Chrome -- it can get muddy, as on a lot of Android phones the Chrome browser is the backend browser for the Google app, emails, podcasts, searches using the Google search bar/pill etc etc etc

Thanks both

Oddly I'm now good, after the first day chrome data use has settled and is as expected and after a few more days the chrome total is only a modest amount more than when I initially posted

For the record I'd previously downloaded a basemap for the area in which we're staying

Cheers
