Recently bought a Philips beard trimmer which is powered by a single AA battery as opposed to being rechargeable. It came with a Philips battery which no doubt will be depleted soon. Just wondering what AA batteries would be a good buy? I've seen Duracell alkaline and energizer lithium, or are the differences minor and I'm overthinking things?

I usually get whatever Duracell is on offer at the supermarket, or failing that whatever Energizer Robert Dyas are flogging by the boat load at the till (I have a LOT of 5 year old's toys to feed!) Don't know why, probably a psychological thing, but I have always equated Duracell with quality and favoured the brand.

I have bought packs of Amazon basics ones before but they never seem to last as long. I have not done any scientific testing, just a perception which could be fuelled by subconscious bias.

Be careful with rechargeable ones, they are a slightly different voltage and so don't work in everything (for example they don't seem to work in my Tado TRVs) and they are also very slightly bigger, I got one stuck in a torch and while it worked, it's never coming out!

Please don't, those are zinc carbon batteries from about 1857.

They're only good for low consumption items like a quartz travel clock or a television remote.

I only use the lithium in my shaver, more power and much longer lasting.

I've given up using Duracell batteries in any device that has irregular use, e.g. the torch left in the car.

Every battery that has leaked in the last 10 years or so has been a Duracell.

I've wondered before if Kodak, JCB etc just agree to have their name used on batteries. I'd be surprised if they manufacturer the batteries themselves.

Lithium batteries won't leak and have a 10 year shelf life.

Snap. Occasionally dud and several have leaked. For the last few years I've bought Panasonic from the Bay and have never had a dud or leakage.

Energizer Lithium are my go to for important stuff.

Amazon Basics are often one of the more cost effective options when outright performance isn't key.

Energizer lithium, can't get better.

Don't get a rechargeable one, they have a nominal output of 1.2v so the trimmer will run like the battery is about to run out all the time.

About Strand Europe Ltd

From its beginnings in 1992, Strand Europe Ltd has grown from a small, family-run UK company to a significant worldwide distribution network. This extraordinary growth was achieved by widening and deepening its product range from VHS tapes to blank media, electrical accessories and media storage systems.

Starting from 2006, Strand started supplying Kodak batteries under License from the Eastman Kodak Company. This led, over the next 6 years, to the most successful distributorship of batteries worldwide, as Strand brought Kodak batteries to become a major market shareholder in the UK battery.

Impressed by the success of Strand, Kodak has entrusted us to become the worldwide license holder to manufacture and sell KODAK batteries, LED Bulbs, Flashlights, Razors and our most recent addition KODAK Wired and Wireless Earphones and Headphones.

With this strong track record, Strand has proved to deliver big business yet remaining flexible, adapting to our fast-paced world, promising to continue developing Kodak batteries.

Our portfolio offers amazing quality and value to the consumer from a globally recognised brand they know & trust!

I use the Lidl rechargeables, mainly for the kids Xbox controllers/iMac mouse & keyboard/electric toothbrushes, last a surprisingly long time and about £7 for 8.
