Ok so the error here was using Samsung Smart switch to set up my new S23 and transfer my stuff from my old Pixel

Its worked seamlessly apart from not taking any app passwords with it which is frustrating to say the least - a quick search suggests Im not the first and whenever Ive ported Android phones before Ive used the Google system and its been flawless.

So, whats the best way to proceed please? My new phone has everything installed and I dont think I can bear going through the 'forgotten password' dance for probably half the installed apps

Old phone is still as it was an hour ago just minus its SIM and set to airplane mode - can I put a password manager on it and then do the same on new phone and sync?? Or wipe the new phone and start again but using the Android transport system not Samsung?

Any thoughts welcome, thanks

I wasn't aware that you could ever port across passwords for apps. I thought they were encrypted within the app. Surely non encrypted passwords are a security risk.

Its entirely possible that Im having a senior moment, however in the past Ive either used "my backup pro" or the standard Android app to take all my stuff over and not had to do this before

I think........

Junk the Samsung keyboard. Install GBoard or Google Keyboard and ensure it's connected to the Google account with your passwords. If the app is written properly and using the correct API's when you're prompted for sign in credentials GBoard should display a key symbol which will retrieve your credentials. Failing that install Chrome and use passwords.google.com to retrieve a password when you have to. I only suggest Chrome as I've an inherent distrust of connecting third party browsers to primary accounts. For Google I'd use Chrome, for MS I'd use Edge etc - but that's probably me just being overly cautious. I've a similar distrust of third party keyboards for important stuff like credentials. Probably a touch OTT, but it keeps things simple.
